Still Not Your Friend, Part 2000

Hlaudi-bride

Today is the annual remembrance of the Soweto Uprising in South Africa –  renamed Youth Day.

Around 176 people are estimated to have been killed, and hundreds injured, when police opened fire on Black schoolchildren protesting having to be taught in Afrikaans.

Let me be very clear:

If your culture supports the use of deadly force against children, I spit on your culture.

If your culture promotes the view of other people as objects to be given as gifts, I spit on your culture.

If your culture enables the people at the top of the pyramid to use the people below them in the pyramid as things rather than beings, I spit on your culture. That would include “my” culture, of course.

Culture appears to be a collection of memes with little real thought behind them, a structure of support for the continuing dominance of a power hierarchy.

The continuing use of culture as an excuse for non-thinking behaviour in humans across the world is a major reason why this world-wide civilisation should be considered an evil to be fought at every opportunity.

I am having none of it.
